Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
